There is no need to install any kind of prerequisite tools or services and you don't have to sacrifice too many resources.

Free Virtual Hotspot comes with a clean and simple user interface, from which you can activate your Wi-Fi hotspot immediately, without any distractions. All you have to do is name your hotspot, specify a password and select your Internet source in a drop menu, after which you may click a button to start the hotspot. Of course, your laptop's Wi-Fi switch must be turned on before anything else.

While running a hotspot, the application will display all devices that connect to it in a list, on the same user interface, along with their IP and MAC addresses. What's more, the application allows you to decide how many clients may connect to your hotspot. You can set a maximum number of clients above the list, with a simple counter.
